Experimental Ink Session
Drawing a line, consciously.
Long before humans had writing, we were already drawing lines. In caves in South Africa and Spain, lines drawn in red pigment have been found on stones and walls dating back tens of thousands of years. Writing appeared much later, around 5,000 years ago. The line is one of the oldest forms of human expression.
So, if someone asked you to "draw a line," how would you do it?
First, what brush or pen would you use?
Is it thick or thin? Soft or stiff?
Is the tip pointed or round?
Would you start from the left, or from the bottom?
Would you load it with a little ink, or a lot?
A single act, "drawing a line," contains all of these elements. Yet most of the time, we are barely aware of them.
In this session, we did several exercises to explore what it means to draw a line consciously: small brushes on small paper, large brushes on large paper, writing our own names again and again and letting the lines fade away… At first, many of us may have thought that "drawing a line" simply meant drawing a straight line, but one fascinating line after another began to appear.
What I repeated to everyone during the session was this: one stroke, one breath. The length of your breath becomes the length of your line.
The Korean artist Lee Ufan says:
"Before working, I calm my breathing, correct my posture, and hold my brush quietly."
If you are familiar with East Asian painting, I think these words will come naturally to you.
What kind of line will you draw?

Experimental Ink Session
